It’s officially the start of a new decade! Do you have your social media marketing plan in order?
As more businesses include social media as a major part of their 2020 marketing plan, we wanted to compile some social media trends we see taking shape this year!
2020 Social Media Trends Will See Less e-Commerce Friction
This year will see a decrease in friction to purchase on social media, as many businesses are embracing augmented reality and social media integration.
In this sense, “Friction” is anything that slows down an online purchase. It can be a complicated check out process or simply requiring a user to “click the link” in your bio.
“Social commerce is well on its way to becoming a mainstream retail channel on par with other mediums like websites and offline stores. This trend will strengthen further with more and more social networks introducing pro-selling features like shoppable posts.” – Influencer Marketing Hub
This means that customers will be able to “buy” directly on social media apps!
2020 Social Media Trends Will See A Final Decline In Organic Reach On Instagram
With a natural decline in reach, companies will need to consider more organic ways to reach their audience on Instagram.
“In reality, social media websites are in the business of advertising. And if you can easily grow an organic following, then you won’t pay them to advertise your business and products.” – Social Insight
Creators will have to get more creative. However, this could also mean that Instagram will see a resurgence of quality content – all-in-all a positive for users.
2020 Social Media Trends Will See The Growth Of Advertising On TikTok
If TikTok continues on its current growth path, it’s only a matter of time before ByteDance (the company that owns TikTok) develops an ad product to rival its competitors. In fact, the company has already launched a beta advertising product.
“TikTok, the short-form mobile video app that’s popular among Gen Z, has been rapidly growing its young user base, and as a result, marketers have been keenly awaiting the full launch of the platform’s ad options to connect with these users.” – Social Media Today
Influencers and marketers are already finding clever ways to market on TikTok and siphon attention away to other platforms. With a fully fleshed-out native ad product, social media marketers will no doubt have a new means of reaching millions.
2020 Social Media Trends Will See An Increase In Podcasts
This one comes as no surprise. Podcasts saw rapid growth in 2019 that will surely continue into this decade.
“Podcasting enables marketers to create self-owned media outside social algorithms and change their media offerings. With the entry level to podcasting rather low from an investment standpoint, many brands will create branded podcasts.” – PR Daily
In late 2019, Spotify opened up it’s podcasts section to all, creating a tidal wave of new creators. Reaching listeners is a major hurdle in podcasting. With the ability to reach Spotify’s 200 mil+ active users, it will undoubtedly be the place to be for podcasts old and new!
2020 will be a year that many previously reluctant businesses begin to take social media seriously. While trends can help marketers gain a temporary boost, quality content remains the ultimate goal.
“In the battle between quality and quantity of social media content, quality wins.” – SmartBug
So keep a close eye out for the trends, but don’t forget what is most important – building a real online community!
