Social influence is becoming a big business (despite what your parents think). However, in a time where with the click of a button and a swipe of a credit card you can purchase social influence status – finding real accounts with real followers is not as easy as it seems (check out this post to spot the signs of a fake influencer!).
In the recent months, we have seen many of the big players in social networking work to improve the authenticity of their networks.
Twitter was one of the first players to make the decision to purge its network of MILLIONS (nearly 70) of fake/ bot accounts.
This hit some people much harder than others. For authentic accounts that didn’t use third party apps and companies to boost their following, less than a handful of followers were lost. But, for accounts that grew their numbers using a little help from their wallet – thousands of followers were removed, exposing and leaving their true social influence on the table.

Instagram just jumped on the bandwagon!
Did you buy some friends and popularity at one point or another? If so, you may receive an in-app message alerting you that your fake numbers have been cleared.
No message – but you’ve seen a sudden drop in follower count or activity this week? This new Instagram campaign probably has a lot to do with it!
Check out the press release from Instagram here.
What’s the best thing you can do to avoid losing followers when these inauthentic account purges occur? Do it the right way!
Although organic growth can take a very long time – the benefits truly outweigh the speed. You will have more REAL engagements on your content (i.e. NOT “Lovely picture! What do you think of mine?”- on every damn photo). You will be more connected to an audience that actually cares about what you are posting, and are more likely to make purchases from you or your company.
