Gen Z Has Entered the Chat

On a technicality, that is, unfortunately, true, I am part of Gen Z, even though I feel a little terrified by my generation sometimes.

My name is Emrys and I am one of two new interns here at Like A Voss Social Media. I currently reside in Kingston, Ontario and I’m a student in the AMC program at St. Lawrence College. Some important information about me firstly; I am a huge nerd, I’ve never broken a bone (only fractured), and I used to draw anime characters back in high school (which may be what you assumed from the first fact). I spend my free time reading, writing, and more often than not, rewatching my favourite comfort shows (I’m looking at you BBC’s “Merlin” and the CW’s “Supernatural”).

As a child of the internet, I’ve felt very in tune with social media since the age of 12 (when I created my first Facebook account). I look back on my cringe-worthy posts and laugh because, at that age, social media’s sole purpose is being an outlet for your thoughts, the good, the bad, the sad, the barely-comedic, etc. It was also where you post your holiday photos sitting on Santa’s lap even when you feel you’re too old for it, but you do it for your Mom anyway.

Present-day, I’m 21 years old and my relationship with social media is ever-changing. I still use it for thought blogging purposes and connecting with all of the wonderful people I’ve met, but now, every interaction and post is carefully crafted, as I realize the power, purpose, and impact associated.

That’s why I wanted to intern at Like A Voss Social Media. I wanted to see the craftsmanship and the “behind the curtain” of social media as a business and for businesses. I wanted to understand the work dedicated to every post, understand how to utilize the tools accessible in order to maximize opportunities for engagement.

As of this moment, it is only my second day and I am anxious, but not in the way I’m used to. My anxiety is rooted in anticipation for what I am learning and will be learning and experiencing. I feel so comfortable with the incredible women on this team and grateful for their guidance and support. I actually felt comfortable from the beginning, even with my first interaction with Mandi. I initially reached out for a sort of “informational interview” to understand Like A Voss Social Media as a business and her day-to-day as a CEO. The funny thing is our conversation ended up being just that, a conversation between two people about life and ourselves, who we are as individuals. It was truly one of the most open and honest conversations I’ve had, and one of the most fun.

My days thus far at Like A Voss Social Media have been filled with learning the importance of keeping feeds fresh with new and relevant content, getting to dive into content creation, and understanding the processes involved with client-based work. Through LAV, I am actively learning about new companies, brands, and organizations to get excited about.

I have an incredible amount to learn from the LAV team and I look forward to working alongside them and sharing my journey of education and experience as it progresses.
