My Inner Influencer

My name is Cheryl and I’m one of the two interns at Like A Voss Social Media. I live in Kingston, Ontario, and attend St. Lawrence College in the AMC program and the last movie I saw in the theatres before the pandemic shut everything down was Cats. I think about this daily, with deep regret and shame.

Aside from that, when I’m not working, I can usually be found doing one of the three things:

  1.   Researching skincare ingredients like an amateur dermatologist
  2.   Rewatching every episode of Derry Girls in between rewatching Knives Out
  3.   Drinking tea and reading under all the blankets I can find

One thing that I did not spend time on was social media.

Growing up, I did not have access to social media. My parents did not believe in it or allow it (my secret MSN Messenger was my pride and joy). It wasn’t until around the time I turned 18 that I got an Instagram account.

I still remember how exciting it was to sign in for the first time, choose a profile picture out of the four images of myself on my phone and the rush that came with following all my friends. It felt like a hermit crab finally getting a shiny new shell.

It very quickly became overwhelming and I felt completely out of my depth. There were so many unspoken rules! I didn’t really understand the hashtag thing, taking good pictures was time consuming and disheartening, so I gave up, almost within the same week.

It has been over four years since I first joined Instagram and my relationship with social media had not changed much until the past few months. I mainly use social media as a way to keep in contact with friends and share content with them.

It has taken some deep self-reflection to understand that my biggest challenges with social media stem from a lack of self-confidence and comparing myself to everyone else.

I always wanted to do more with it, but I just did not know where to begin.

My time at Like A Voss has given me so much insight into all the behind the scenes work that goes into a well-curated social media feed and I’m absolutely loving it. In fact, it has made me truly realize how much I was missing out by limiting myself to an observer role on social platforms.

In fact, part of the reason I was so drawn to LAV was because it is a great team of social media wizards who challenge me to do better, go beyond my comfort zone and push me to make the most of the tools at my disposal.

In the few weeks I’ve been an intern at LAV, I have already made more progress than in the past four years. I’m still self-conscious and anxious, but it’s a different kind of anxiety. It’s an unique kind of anticipation and curiosity for social media that I didn’t have before.

Now I suppose it’s time for the inner influencer in me to make a grand debut.
