For many entrepreneurs and small businesses, social media can be an absolute game-changer! All it takes is one viral post and a business can suddenly take off.
At Like A Voss Social Media, we’re highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs who are killing the online game. This week’s spotlight is on the owner of DGMUA, Debbie Goulding!
A Little Bit About Debbie Goulding
My love of makeup started at a very young age. From as far back as I can remember, I was always into my mother’s red lipstick and lotions. And let us not forget the high heels! I guess I was born with the “makeup gene”! I grew up reading fashion magazines featuring such greats as Twiggy, Cher and Farrah Fawcett! It was from those articles and photos that my love for makeup artistry was born. In the early 80’s, I attended a fashion school in Vancouver studying makeup and modeling. These were important elements to educate and instill self-confidence. Those elements are now a gift that I am passionate about sharing with other women.
With my experience and knowledge, I am able to see the unique beauty in each woman and highlight it in a very natural way. I am non-judgemental, so you will feel comfortable and at home in my chair. Though I do offer my services to all ages, I have a strong interest in supporting mature women because I am 60+. I relate to that demographic of women and help them to feel at ease and confident when applying their makeup.
With only a few lessons, I can address any concerns you have and guide you to enhance and discover your natural-born beauty ~ we all have it! You will leave my studio feeling Empowered, Confident, and Beautiful! It brings me much joy and gratitude knowing that what I have taught you, could change the way you look at yourself and how you feel about yourself. Always know that I am here for you if you have questions. All of my clients are very important to me.
Our CEO Mandi interviewed Debbie about her secret to success in business and in life. We also got some awesome insights into what they think makes social media such an effective tool in business.
A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur
1: How long have you been in business?
I have been involved in the beauty and makeup industry for 30+ years now.
2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start DGMUA?
9-5 are hours that I haven’t worked in many years! They’ve never suited who I am and the lifestyle I want to live. I’ve been an independent businesswoman since 1986 and have never looked back!
3: What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur?
Being in control of MY time. Following MY passions and dreams. Being able to charge what I AM worth. Having control of MY decisions. 😉
4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as a female entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start DGMUA?
The hardest thing I had to overcome was the fear of failure. Was I going to make it? When I first started out, I was afraid I didn’t know everything I needed to know. I was always worried about what people thought of me and who my competition was. But with age and experience, I have learned to manage and cope with those feelings and emotions. You never stop growing or learning in your business no matter how long you’ve been doing it. I still have some fears, but don’t we all?
5: What is one thing about working in the beauty industry that people would be surprised to learn?
I’m 61 and still going strong! That might not be a surprise to anyone, but coming from the baby boomer generation, the demand for a makeup artist my age is pretty big! I love working with mature women to help them look and feel better about themselves. It’s very gratifying!
And Now Onto The Social Media Questions!
6: Do you have a favorite social media platform? Why?
I have 2 and they are both important to my business. Instagram and Facebook. Pictures tell a story, so IG is perfect for this! And what I do is very visual so it allows me to share my work and art. I also believe in education – it is a powerful tool! I love posting blogs and stories on my Facebook page to keep people up-to-date and informed on what is going on in the industry.
7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?
I learned quickly that SM was a fast and easy way to communicate organically with potential customers and to communicate with your existing customers. It’s also a great way to get your brand out to identify your business and what you have to offer. Best of all, it’s an inexpensive way to advertise!
8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?
It’s a very effective tool! I have certainly gained more followers and customers through SM! I highly recommend it for any business, especially if you’re a small business owner/entrepreneur!
9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?
Be consistent with your postings and make them fun and engaging! The more present you are on SM, the more followers and potential customers you will get!
