For many entrepreneurs and small businesses, social media can be an absolute game-changer! All it takes is one viral post and a business can suddenly take off.

At Like A Voss Social Media, we’re highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs who are killing the online game. This week’s spotlight is on Kathryn Newman, Owner of Kathryn Newman Real Estate!

Born into the real estate business, Kathryn is a second-generation REALTOR who has had the pleasure of helping clients through all of the various stages and cycles of the real estate market. At a young age, she learned all of the ins and outs of the business working at a very successful and busy real estate office helping to ensure the success of all of the REALTORS at the office. Her passion for real estate has led her to have her own highly successful real estate business that has earned her many sales awards and recognition amongst her peers and most importantly, the repeat business and referrals of her past and present clients.

She has built her business around trust, knowledge, honesty, professionalism, hard work, and great customer service and prides herself on building relationships with her clients that last a lifetime. She really listens to her client’s needs and responds with a customized solution, she works hard to ensure better service year after year and she strives to ensure that every one of her clients feels that they are her top priority at any given time.

Kathryn has a great deal of experience buying and selling city, rural, cottage, and investment properties having assisted many of her clients through the process as well as purchasing and selling many of her own. She knows how emotional and stressful that it can be and that is why she works hard to turn buying and selling a property into a pleasant and stress-free process.

Not only does Kathryn have extensive knowledge of the Kingston real estate market, but she also has a wealth of knowledge of the other nearby real estate markets having worked in one of the hottest real estate markets in Canada for many years. As a result, she has an abundance of contacts and resources both inside and outside of Kingston that will give her clients an added advantage.

In just one meeting with Kathryn, you will be confident that she has the experience, knowledge, and work ethic to be your REALTOR for life and she welcomes the opportunity to work with you.

Our CEO Mandi interviewed Kathryn about her secret to success in business and in life. We also got some awesome insights into what they think makes social media such an effective tool in business.

A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur

1: How long have you been in business?

I have been licensed myself for 13 years, however, I have been in the industry for a total of 24 years having worked as a receptionist and assistant prior to getting my own real estate license.

2: I know it says “born into” above, but what made you decide to actually get into real estate? What was it about the industry?

Growing up with both of my parents in the industry, I really got to see the ins and outs of the business.  Purchasing or selling a home is one of the biggest decisions that people make in their lifetime.  I absolutely love helping people through the different stages of their lives and I enjoy making their dreams/goals come true. From buying their first home, to purchasing a cottage, to buying an investment property to selling their home to travel the world. I get to be there to witness the joy as they accomplish what they have worked so hard to do and I get to use my expertise to guide them through the process which I love being able to do.

3: What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur?

I really enjoy being responsible for my own success and being my own boss.   I am in charge of how much effort I put in and in turn how successful I will be.  Thankfully, I absolutely love what I do and so that translates into me always giving 110% every day.  I also really enjoy the support from all of the other amazing female entrepreneurs out there.  We all like to see each other succeed and I think that is great!

4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as a female entrepreneur?

For me, it’s trying to find that work/home life balance.  I have to make sure that I schedule my time for family and keeping up with the house because it is easy for me to get lost in my work.

5: What is one thing about working in the real estate industry that people would be surprised to learn?

I think that people would be really surprised to learn just how many hours go into absolutely everything that we do.  My clients see me for the hours that I am in front of them; however, there are many many hours that I put in behind the scenes that nobody ever sees or knows about.  Actually, the bulk of my work is done behind the scenes.   Everything that I do in front of my clients looks easy because of all of that hard work that they don’t see.

And Now Onto The Social Media Questions!

6: Do you have a favorite social media platform? Why?

Personally, I prefer Instagram and that is because I find that people are a lot more engaged with my content compared to some of the other platforms.   I can also show my personality a little more there so that people really get to know me on a personal level as well.

7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?

I have been on social media for my business for a while now, but only on Facebook. During these unprecedented times, I really had to shift everything over to social media and start up on more platforms as a way to promote myself because I could not go out and meet people in person.   It has been an effective way for me to communicate with my customers through these times and now that I have put some time into figuring it all out, it is something that I definitely think is important to continue with moving forward.

8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?

Yes, it has definitely been great for my business!!  It really allows me to get in front of a lot more people than I could reach in person and I find that it has enhanced my credibility and branding.

9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?

I would say that it takes a lot of time and effort and it is quite the learning curve to really figure out how to use all of the different platforms and start using them properly for your business.  You may pull out your hair trying to figure it all out because there is a lot to learn; however, it is worth all of the time and effort.

A Little More About Kathryn

I have always been really passionate about real estate; however, I have a few other passions as well.  Fitness is one of them and I worked as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor for 11 years prior to getting my real estate license and then part-time throughout my first few years until I built up my business.  Fitness is still a big part of my life and I find that it helps offset the stress of being an entrepreneur.  Travel has also been something that I love to do and will get back to once it gets a little easier to do so again.  Being outdoors is another favourite of mine.  When I am not working, you will find me out on a lake boating, swimming or fishing, on a trail biking, running or hiking or on a ski hill in the winter.
