Voss Babe Female Entrepreneur Series – Omtta Hermiz, Owner of Dymonz Skin Resort

For many entrepreneurs and small businesses, social media can be an absolute game-changer! All it takes is one viral post and a business can suddenly take off.

At Like A Voss Social Media, we’re highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs who are killing the online game. This week’s spotlight is on Omtta Hermiz, Owner of Dymonz Skin Resort!

Dymonz Skin Resort is a Toronto-based company specializing in professional-grade skincare and offering skincare advice through online consultations. “Our mission is to allow a safe space for individuals from all walks of life. We are dedicated to providing healthy skin from within and delivering long-term corrective solutions for all skin concerns in combination with wellness and a healthy lifestyle”.

Our CEO Mandi interviewed Omtta about her secret to success in business and in life. We also got some awesome insights into what she thinks makes social media such an effective tool in business.

A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur

1: How long have you been in business?

Dymonz Skin Resort recently celebrated its one year anniversary in April 2021!

2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start Dymonz Skin Resort?

Although starting a solo business was tough, especially during a world-wide pandemic – doing what I love made it that much easier! It was an incredibly daring move to take a leap of faith into the beauty industry independently with little-no background in business. Not only was it a completely new world to me, but there were, and still are many components to owning a business that require full-time dedication: creatively, financially, emotionally and physically. Nonetheless, planting the seed and watching it bloom has been the most fulfilling experience and I wouldn’t trade it in for the world. I made the right decision to build on something that I’m passionate about while excelling in this new world of business. My near-future goal is to operate Dymonz Skin Resort on a full-time basis.

3: What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur?

What I love most about being a female entrepreneur is the relationships I continue to build with like-minded women in the business industry. If you know me, then you know that I love interacting with new people, building new relationships and supporting those around me as much as I possibly can. When you deliver positive energy, you shall receive positive energy and the support I encounter on a daily basis from female entrepreneurs within the industry is unreal. It’s almost like competition is a thing of the past and collaboration and support is where it’s at (who knew?!) Without the mentorship, encouragement, and partnerships I’ve built this past year, I don’t believe my business would be where it stands today.

4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as a female entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start Dymonz Skin Resort?

The hardest thing I had to overcome was myself. If you know anything about Virgos, then you’re probably aware that we’re crippling neat freaks, extremely hard on ourselves, and overly picky about every little thing. Whenever a plan didn’t go my way, or I stumbled across a challenge…I felt like giving it all up. I’d browse social media and begin comparing myself to other female entrepreneurs and their successes. Why wasn’t I growing? What am I doing wrong?..all the things. However, along the way I learnt to be easier on myself as challenges are a form of growth, and failure is a lesson for success. We’re all human and we aren’t meant to be perfect. And, guess what? When you make mistakes, you’re more relatable! People LOVE relatable. I also found that I struggled a lot with overworking myself. Having a business is demanding – it literally becomes your child. You provide for it all day, everyday, and you forget to take care of yourself. So a word of advice? Don’t be afraid to take breaks. Self-care. Always.

5: What is one thing about working in the beauty and skincare industry that people would be surprised to learn?

Whilst working in the beauty industry I’ve learnt that not everything labelled on a product is an ethical claim, such as the terms “clean”, “fragrance-free”, “non-toxic” and “natural” – a few of many examples. This may be a shocker for those who don’t realize this. As a newbie in the skincare industry, it was most definitely an eye opener for me. The majority of these claims are a “feel good” marketing tactic for the regular consumer to identify with the product and feel good about investing in it. As part of the law, beauty products do not require FDA approval before being sold at your local drugstore or beauty department. However, there are limitations on products that claim to make changes to the structure of the skin. These products would be identified as a drug and must therefore follow the necessary requirements for “drugs”.

6: What do you love most about being an aesthetician?

Growing up I suffered with severe rosacea and always felt self-conscious about my skin. I picked up my very first foundation brush at the age of 16 and began working in the makeup industry until I was 24. I’ll never forget the first time I applied makeup on a client who struggled with hyperpigmentation. She quickly burst into tears as she looked at her reflection. She felt “so beautiful” and couldn’t recognize the woman in the mirror. Although it made me extremely happy to see her crying happy tears; it absolutely broke my heart. Needless to say, I continued to experience these very moments time and time again and I wanted more. I wanted to offer my clients more than just a painted canvas: healthy skin and long-lasting confidence. So here we are today! What I love most about being an aesthetician is building long-lasting relationships with my clients and helping them find their confidence again. Waking up to messages such as “you’ve changed my life”, “I feel confident leaving the house with no makeup on”, or “you have no idea how thankful I am for you”, is truthfully the most rewarding part of my job.

And Now Onto The Social Media Questions!

7: Do you have a favourite social media platform? Why?

My favourite social media platform is definitely Insta! Instagram is a great place to target audiences from all walks of life and a great source for inspiration and collaboration. I also look to Instagram as a platform where I can be more personable and unapologetically myself. This allows for immediate connection with potential clients who may find comfort, trust, and alignment with my vision and mission.

8: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?

Being in the beauty industry for some time, I was no stranger to the social media world and its benefits to building a platform. In the past, I was able to form connections with multiple brands, and bring awareness to product and service offerings while building long-lasting relationships. The power of social media is incredible!

9: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?

Social media is definitely an effective marketing tool and has personally changed my life. Prior to the pandemic, I was working a full-time desk job in addition to working at a spa on a part-time basis. Once our world completely shifted, I was left stranded and forced to think outside of the box. Understanding it’s significance, I ran to social media, specifically Insta, to begin my solo journey in aesthetics. I began by sharing valuable information on skincare, offered complimentary virtual consultations and retailed trial-size facial kits as a form of income. I couldn’t believe the response I was receiving. My brand quickly grew and I was able to build a website to continue offering virtual consultations and skincare products. I started Dymonz Skin Resort with one skincare line in my shop, and as of today, have partnered with four very well-respected, professional skincare lines. The growth of my business would not have been possible without the use of social media!

10: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?

The best advice I can offer to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers is to not be afraid to show the face behind the brand! Allow your customers to get to know you and what you’re about because authenticity will set you apart. Get silly from time to time, share your favourite recipes or outfits, a funny meme, maybe? And don’t forget to make it engaging! This builds trust, genuine relationships and allows your audience to get to know you and who you are, outside of the business.

A Little More About Omtta

My name is Omtta Hermiz and I’m the owner of Dymonz Skin Resort. Aside all things skin…I’m a big foodie! In my spare time I love to cook and visit small eateries in Toronto to try different dishes. I have a Jack Russel/Yorkshire mix, Foxxy, who’s the love of my life and the biggest diva I know. We love long walks to the park and Starbucks – a Tall Blonde for me and a Puppuccino for Foxxy. I also love to travel and cannot wait for life to get back to the way we once knew it!
