Voss Babe Female Entrepreneur Series – Shenice Scott, Owner and Chef at Munchy Guru

For many entrepreneurs and small businesses, social media can be an absolute game-changer! All it takes is one viral post and a business can suddenly take off.

At Like A Voss Social Media, we’re highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs who are killing the online game. This week’s spotlight is on Shenice Scott – owner and chef at Munchy Guru!

Munchy Guru is a Caribbean inspired catering service. We provide delicious healthy meals that are full of flavor and there is love in every bite.

Our CEO Mandi interviewed Shenicec about her secret to success in business and in life. We also got some awesome insights into what they think makes social media such an effective tool in business.

A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur

1: How long have you been in business?

I’ve been cooking and selling food to friends and classmates since university. It was always a good way to make some extra pocket money. It wasn’t until I moved to Kingston in late 2019 that I thought to take it seriously. My first few clients fell in love with my Jerk chicken and then things just started to take off.

2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start Munchy Guru?

I still work a 9-5 😑 but I’m so excited I’m taking steps that will take me away from that very soon. As cliché as it is I’ve learned that I’m happiest when I feel free. Although the days of the week I have dedicated to my business are often very long and have little room to rest, the rush of knowing all the work is going to something that could potentially take care of my family for generations is better than anything I’ve ever experienced. I’m learning fast that when I leave the 9- 5 ill be picking up a 24/7 and I couldn’t be more ready for the challenge.

3: What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur?

I love being a go-getter and having a purpose. Prior to starting my business I felt like I was just going through the motions of life. I got the degree,  the job, the car, and the house but I had no direction or passion for the things I was doing. When I thought of my future it was hard to think past what I was already doing and that scared me. Now that I have Munchy Guru I feel like I can do anything, overcome any challenge, and achieve any goal I set my mind to. Every day I think of new ways to elevate my business and brand. Now when I think of my future I can clearly see the path I want to take in life.

4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as a female entrepreneur?

For me, the hardest thing has been learning my limitations. I like to push myself to the best of my abilities and produce the best products I can at all times. As my business is growing I’ve had to learn to say no and be okay with not being able to do everything all at once. I’ve had to learn to be kind to myself and remember that this is all so new to me and that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Although I have dreams of growing  Munchy Guru into a billion-dollar company its not there yet and that’s okay. This is the time to set a strong foundation.

5: What is one thing about working in the food industry that people would be surprised to learn?

I’m not at liberty to discuss the secrets of the kitchen lol most people are surprised when they learn I’m vegetarian. I hope to be 100% plant-based by 2021 but I love cheese so it’s hard.😫

Now Onto The Social Media Questions!

6: Do you have a favorite social media platform? Why?

I’m not a social media guru at all. I can manage on Instagram and that’s about it. I like that its simple to use and I’m able to target my market with hashtags. I didn’t know a single person when I moved to Kingston so I have to attribute all my current success to my Instagram page.

7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?

We live in a generation of social media. I think using these platforms is just a natural way to have a competitive business. You have to go where the people are, in 2020 they are on their phones so that’s where your business needs to be.

8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?

I’m currently running my business through my Instagram page. Without it, I wouldn’t have a way to promote and connect with my clients. Its amazing how much traffic I can generate with just a quick picture and a cute caption. Plus the instant feedback is great to help me make business decisions.

9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?

Be authentic and consistent, it’s as simple as that. I think of social media as a part-time job. I have set times per day that I dedicate to the growth of my page.

A Little More About Shenice

I’m obsessed with tattoos, I have over 50 hours of tattoo time under my belt and I can’t wait to get more. My most recent tattoo was a chef’s hat done by Brie Fraser Designs (one of your previous Voss Babes). I recently got my own tattoo machine and have started doing permanent makeup for friends and family.  One day I plan to open a spa that offers luxury treatments like body contouring, permanent make-up and set the vibes with great music and delicious food.
