Voss Babe Female Entrepreneur Series – Tareca Whittingham, Owner of Kandiilash

For many entrepreneurs and small businesses, social media can be an absolute game-changer! All it takes is one viral post and a business can suddenly take off.

At Like A Voss Social Media, we’re highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs who are killing the online game. This week’s spotlight is on Tareca Whittingham, Owner of Kandiilash!

Kandiilash is an all-inclusive beauty brand! From products to the brand ambassadors everyone should feel welcomed and included. Tareca knows what it’s like to feel like you’re not represented in the beauty world, so instead of constantly feeling on the outside of the box, Kandiilash broke down that box.

Our CEO Mandi interviewed Tareca about her secret to success in business and in life. We also got some awesome insights into what they think makes social media such an effective tool in business.

A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur

1: How long have you been in business?

I just started my lash Company in march of 2020!

2: What made you decide to start Kandiilash?

The reason I started Kandiilash is that I know that at times it’s hard for me to find the PERFECT strip lash.

In a world full lash extensions, I have slightly sensitive eyes so it’s hard for me to tolerate lash extensions, which means that I often wear strip lashes! And Kandiilash was born!

3: What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur?

What I love most about being a BLACK female entrepreneur is the ability to see the growth that I have personally and professionally. I love waking up and seeing messages about how my lashes, or my lip glosses have been a great product! My goal is to inspire other young Black females! I want them to see that Black women are out here breaking down barriers!! That is a movement I want to be part of.

4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as a female entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start Kandiilash?

The hardest thing is when someone reaches out to purchases a product and says wow that’s expensive.

I have put hours and hours of time into my products, and research – so it makes me feel like my time is not valued. But then I remember that I have worked hard, and if someone REALLY wants my products and services no price is too high. There is something out there for everyone, and my goal is to be for everyone – there is no limit to beauty!

5: What is one thing about working in the beauty industry that people would be surprised to learn?

I think people would be surprised that there is ALWAYS a new market, this is a community that changes every day, there is always something “NEW” that catches people’s eyes and it’s hard work to keep up.

And Now Onto The Social Media Questions!

6: Do you have a favorite social media platform? Why?

I LOVE! Instagram…it is by far the best in my thoughts. I enjoy seeing people from all over share small fragments of their lives.

7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?

The reason I started using Instagram is that I know that through one simple hashtag I can reach THOUSANDS! That’s all you need is – one!!

8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?

I believe that if done correctly Instagram especially can be a very useful tool, in terms of knowing when and what to post! And even how to post it!

9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?

The best advice I can give is “Scared money don’t make no money.” I say this because it costs money to make money. You have to put yourself out there, and create your own door, don’t worry about putting your foot in someone else’s, anything you do there is a market for it whether it be here in Kingston or across the world in New Zealand! Anything you do can relate to others!
