Voss Boss Entrepreneur Spotlight – Cassidy Webb, Owner of Poppy and Cotton

For many entrepreneurs and small businesses, social media can be an absolute game-changer! All it takes is one viral post and a business can suddenly take off.

At Like A Voss Inc, we’re highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs who are killing the online game. This week’s spotlight is on Cassidy Webb, owner of Poppy and Cotton!

Poppy and Cotton is a small business focusing on the creation of handmade items for the lover of pretty things. Creating accessories, home decor and everything in between!

Our man Emrys interviewed Cassidy about her secret to success in business and in life. We also got some awesome insights into what they think makes social media such an effective tool in business.

A Little Bit About Being an Entrepreneur

1: How long have you been in business?

My business has been in operation since October of 2017. I was still in high school, grade 11 to be exact. I actually remember that I would work on products on my lunch hour, just to ensure that I had orders out on time. Anyone who has a small business knows, it’s truly a labour of love.

2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start Poppy and Cotton?

As stated previously, when I started my business I was still in high school so I didn’t even have much experience with a “regular” 9-5. I started my business for a different reason. That year my poppy, Jim, passed away. I really looked up to my poppy, so his passing was a hard type of loss for me to navigate. I needed some sort of outlet and had always loved crafting, creating and designing. So, I started posting my creations on my personal social media platforms and was shocked at the response I got.

3: What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?

The creative/artistic outlet! I truly feel the most “accomplished” after I finish making something! I also really enjoy the connections I am able to make with other people, whether it be my supporters/customers or other creators.

4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as an entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start Poppy and Cotton?

One of the biggest misconceptions when you take a leap into something you’re passionate about (like starting a business) is that everyone around you will support you. Unfortunately, there will always be people who look at your dream as being “silly” and don’t believe that your business will take off at all. I’m sure that when I first started this in high school there were other kids that didn’t understand what I was doing. I have had to learn that not everyone is rooting for you to succeed, but that’s okay, because your biggest supporter should be yourself!

5: What is one thing about working in the makers industry that people would be surprised to learn?

Any time someone has brought up another small business that makes the same things I do, there’s always this weird competitive undertone. Almost as if I must dislike them simply because we make the same things. But that’s not really how it works for me! It’s not a competition. There’s room for all of us to succeed! In fact, I enjoy talking to creators similar to me – they just get it!

And Now Onto The Social Media Questions!

6: Do you have a favorite social media platform? Why?

Definitely Instagram, especially the “stories” feature! It’s just such a fun, quick way to communicate with your followers and even interact in a more personal way with the use of polls, quizzes and the “ask questions” feature.

7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?

I have always enjoyed social media, even just on my own “personal” pages. So the simple answer: It’s just fun! I enjoy marketing/advertising, creating visuals, advertisements, promotional videos, etc!

8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?

If it wasn’t for social media, I truly believe my business would not be what it is today. Since opening, I have solely used Instagram and Facebook to advertise, promote and sell my pieces. Although, I do have a website coming soon (keep an eye out for Poppyandcotton.ca!)

9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?

Please be yourself when it comes to your social media presence! This is what will set you apart from others. Your personality should shine through each and every piece of content. Don’t be afraid to get weird, silly, and honest about who you are.

A Little More About Cassidy

When I’m not creating, I’m usually listening to music (Mostly 90’s country!), binging trash reality TV, refinishing furniture, or hanging out with my dog! I got my toy poodle Banjo a couple years ago and he’s my very best friend. He sits next to me while I complete every order!
