At Like A Voss Inc, we’re highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs who are killing the online game. This week’s spotlight is on Madison Smith, Owner of Madison Smith Real Estate.
I grew up watching my Mom kill it in real-estate. I always loved the idea of being my own boss and doing whatever felt right to me. I also knew i could leverage my marketing skills (many of which were learned from LAV ;)). So, I embarked on the real estate journey and haven’t looked back!
Our CEO Mandi interviewed Madison about her secret to success in business and in life. This interview is super special because – Madison used to work with the Like A Voss team, and left to pursue this journey. And we could not be more PROUD of what she’s accomplished, and her success so far. We love it when our team members transition and become their OWN BOSS (that’s actually kind of our goal – oddly enough).
A Little Bit About Being an Entrepreneur
1: How long have you been in business?
About 4 months! Hard to believe lol.
2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start your business?
I am not someone who thrives off of routine…I like the ebbs & flows of real estate. It’s the perfect balance of business, social, down-time, busy-time…no day is ever the “same” and I knew that was a sustainable lifestyle I could live while still enjoying my career.
3: What do you love most about being a real estate agent?
Being my own boss. I like that you get out whatever you put in… You get what you give! It’s also so fun to wear so many hats when you own a small business. It keeps things interesting and you really have no choice but to keep on learning and growing.
4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as an entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start your business?
Discipline! When I don’t have showings/buyer visits/at the office its easy to lose track of time working from home and still be in PJ’s at 2pm lol!
5: What is one thing about working in your industry that people would be surprised to learn?
Realtors agents are NOT trying to “sell” clients on anything….we actually do the opposite. I want to find every possible problem or risk with a property before you put an offer in, because well….you’re kinda spending your life’s savings on it!!! Our job is mostly made up of lead generation and due diligence!

6: Do you have a favourite social media platform? Why?
7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?
I was always active on socials and had a couple thousand followers on my personal page before starting real estate. I knew this was and an advantageous head start to growing my online presence/business so I decided to blend the two worlds from there!
8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?
1000000%!!! I have had most of my business from social media. Whether it’s leads that found me through paid ads, explore page, hashtags, or a reconnect with old friends…these platforms are amazing tools.
9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?
Just go for it! Don’t care what people think about you promoting yourself, you’re doing what’s best for you. Try new things, learn new programs, see what works for your business and what performs well. BUT, most importantly….be consistent!!
A Little More About Madison
I grew up with two older brothers, I played hockey and I was an elite cheerleader my whole life. Being an athlete was a big part of shaping who I am today. I only take a handful of things seriously (because life’s too short!) & I’m known for having no filter at all (lol…learning a little more these days). Nothing brings me more peace and joy than being lakeside at the cottage with all of the people I love most (bonus points if it’s sunny and I got a cold drink in my hand ;))
