A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur

1: How long have you been in business for?

I have been working in the makeup industry for a little over 10 years. I’ve been in business for myself for 8

2: What made you decide to start Conveying Beauty

Conveying Beauty which has seen a few branding changes over the years really is a labour of love.

I love being a makeup artist. I began my career working within the industry for a cosmetics company but my job was not solely focused on applications. That was the reason behind my career choice, so it felt natural to allow myself the ability to do them as often as possible. While the demand for onsite artists was growing I decided to step out into the world of freelance and it was the best decision I could have made!

3: What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur?

Definitely the connections and relationships you build with other entrepreneurs and clients.

I have been so lucky to create friendships throughout the years of working within this industry. It’s filled with really amazing women, who are so supportive and genuinely just want to see everyone succeed. You’re also constantly surrounded by creatives who are really inspiring!

4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as a female entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start your business?

Not overdoing it! Being primarily a wedding based makeup artist, the core part of my business runs heavy for about 6 months of the year. I tend to take on as much as I can during that time because before you know it the season is over and the busiest stretch of your year begins to slow.

This also creates an opportunity to burn out, so it has taken years of learning to know when to draw the line!

5: What is one thing about working in the makeup industry that people would be surprised to learn?

That the act of the application isn’t as black and white as people believe. Being a makeup artist goes so far beyond just simply picking something up and applying it. The decisions we make are always done with intention and there are a lot of factors that go into making those decisions.

From facial shape to skin type/texture, colour theory. As an artist, you must have the ability to hone into the educational part of the job and implement it into the creative.

And Now Onto The Social Media Questions!

6: Do you have a favorite social media platform? Why?

Definitely Instagram. You’re constantly inundated with inspiration, it’s amazing! It allows artists who may not be presented with the opportunity to be as creative as we would like, to showcase various sides of ourselves. It’s also a great teaching tool. Most artists naturally have a desire to educate. Platforms like Instagram make that easy

7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?

Word of mouth has always been the number one source in my client bookings. That is amazing but potential clients also want to view your work or read about others experiences with your services! When Instagram took off it seemed like the perfect place to showcase all of that in one spot. It allows potential clients to get a sense of your style.

8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?

Absolutely! Everything is so easily accessible. It creates an opportunity to reach people that I may not have been able to without it.

9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?

Do it!  It is a favoured method of contact for so many. People are incredibly visual so the creative freedom it allows is amazing. Everyone moves so quickly these days, these platforms allow you the ability to reach out and contact someone instantly which, in this industry, is very beneficial.
