For many entrepreneurs and small businesses, social media can be an absolute game-changer! All it takes is one viral post and a business can suddenly take off.
At Like A Voss Inc, we’re highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs who are killing the online game. This week’s spotlight is on our very own Abby Hobbs – Owner of Hobbsy Photography!
Hey I’m Abby (Hobbsy), and I am a local photographer in the Kingston area. I currently have two sides to my little business! On one side I photograph lifestyle and branding for influencers, professionals needing headshots, and small businesses looking to elevate their social strategies. On the other side, I photograph couples! I know, not very niche of me… HOWEVER, I’ve mainly photographed family, friends, and friends of friends for engagements, maternity, and intimate weddings. While I mainly do sessions outdoors, I occasionally take my studio on the road to my clients! Ask me about it!!
If you’ve been here a while you know that here at Like A Voss Inc. we like to highlight our staff – and also apparently hire people who have their own businesses. LOL! Here is a bit about Abby’s photography business…..
A Little Bit About Being an Entrepreneur
1: How long have you been in business?
For around two years, but started photography for fun about 15 years ago! (I was just a baby!)
2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start your business?
Hobbsy Photography is my side hustle! But what made me switch jobs was realizing how burnt out I was so I stepped back for a month and a half to recenter.
3: What do you love most about being a business owner?
The idea of making something mine in this world, no matter how small. I love being thought of as the creative friend who does photography!
4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as an entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start your business?
Establishing myself as a photographer in a location so saturated with such amazing photographers!
5: What is one thing about working in your industry that people would be surprised to learn?
Taking photo’s is the smallest part of my job! There is SO much that goes into the back end of my business. Photographers wear many hats… And we have to! Once you get some momentum behind your photography, more and more clients reach out to have a session done and to handle this change you need to have processes set up, platforms to keep organized, constant communications open, and so much more.
And Now Onto The Social Media Questions!
6: Do you have a favourite social media platform? Why?
8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?
I would say yes! Almost all of my clients came to me via social media! Those who don’t I know personally in one way or another!
9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?
I would say make yourself known on your page! Potential clients want to know who they are reaching out to for your services. This sounds cliche but it’s very important to be yourself on social media. Personality wise, you should never copy your competitors in they way you carry yourself or else you will always be a step behind. Be innovative, get inspired, stand out by just being who you are!
A Little More About Abby
As much as I love travelling, I’m learning that I’m definitely a homebody with a passion for all things home improvement! I could watch real estate and home decor shows all day, and have Pinterest boards to back it all up! (laughing face emoji) One day I would love to build my one home and have a space for my photography!
