This is the fourth entry in my intern blog series. Has anyone caught onto the title theme yet? Well, good luck, cause now I’m switching the theme up (lol)! Extra points if you can guess where this and the next 2 entry titles take inspiration from.
I am now finishing up my first month as an intern and I can’t believe just how quickly it has gone. I’ve written more in the span of a single week than I would have in a month of school, and no, that isn’t a complaint. I genuinely feel a drive to create quality content more than I ever did in school and, to be honest, I’m still trying to discern the true motivator here. I guess the important thing is that there IS a true motivator and that it has been consistently present since working with this team.
If I had to make a guess, I would probably say that the team culture is what has been the biggest influence and motivator in the quality of my work. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one to completely disregard the quality of my work by any means, but having a super supportive team and leader is probably the best motivator I could ask for when delving into a new position with new responsibilities like this. If you’ve ever worked somewhere with a poor team culture you will totally understand what I mean when I say wow, not a great time for anyone involved.
This team dynamic that is able to be transparent, trusting, and vulnerable with each other somehow through a virtual messaging app astounds me. I would be curious to learn how the LAV culture compares to the vast majority of businesses that have had to pivot to remote work over the last year or two. I’m only one month into this position but it is glaringly obvious to me that without a healthy team culture it would be an entirely different experience, and likely a much less enjoyable one.
So, if I had to pass on any tips of wisdom, it would be this: value your team, your interactions, and the relationships you nurture on a daily basis. You might not have the ability to dictate your workspace or environment every day but we all have the choice of how we interact with and support each other. I know that it goes unsaid at this point but the pandemic has negatively impacted so many of us and our daily lives over the last year, it is increasingly important to be conscious of our relationships and ability to make someone’s day even just a little better.
With only 2 weeks left in my internship I’m already beginning to experience some FOMO (fear of missing out) at the thought of not being on Slack with the team throughout the day. That being said, I know that I have made some connections that will last far beyond any of our time with LAV. Beyond all of the amazing learning opportunities, I am extremely proud to say that I have worked alongside this team and made some friends.
