Wood Media LLC is a Squarespace Web Design agency for service-based businesses serving clients across the United States.
Our CEO Mandi interviewed Elizabeth about their secret to success in business and in life. We also got some awesome insights into what she thinks makes social media such an effective tool in business.
A Little Bit About Being an Entrepreneur
1: How long have you been in business?
1 year full time, but I freelanced for 4 years before going full time.
2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start your business?
I was burnt out from the job in healthcare and needed to be done. I was tired of not being able to take care of myself and working ridiculously long hours. When I went full time I just finished my degree in Graphic Communications, which I finished full time online while working full time in healthcare while also building my business from 4am – 7am everyday before I left for my 9-5.
3: What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?
Helping my amazing clients. The freedom is provides me. The creativity I’m able to express everyday in trainings, designing websites. The ability to have an amazing team that not only supports my clients but helps me grow as an entrepreneur!
4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as an entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start your business?
Hardest thing: Figuring out the “secret sauce” I have to book clients and have a consistent income.
Something I didn’t foresee: Not being able to turn your brain off as an entrepreneur is one of the biggest challenges to overcome. Learning how to have that balance and maintain a healthy work/life balance is crucial.
5: What is one thing about working in your industry that people would be surprised to learn?
The amount of time that goes into designing one website is always shocking to people. Between the copywriting, strategy of the design, brand strategy/design, and the actual implementation of the designs takes so much time and communication!

6: Do you have a favourite social media platform? Why?
7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?
I am a fully remote design agency so social media is my “portfolio” or “landing page.” It’s a learning area for potential clients to see why they should work with us, see our work, and it works for us to convert leads to clients.
8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?
I would say so! I love to connect with new people, use it as a place to store educational content for followers to refer back to, and really serve our audience. It brings me joy to be able to provide those additional learning tools. 🙂
9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?
Don’t be on every platform or you’ll burn out. Find the 1-3 platforms you really enjoy being on and stay with those, especially if your target client is on that platform as well.

I am an avid lover of coffee. I LOVE chatting with people over coffee, it creates a comfy environment that everyone knows they’re welcome in.
I’m a very outgoing person. I love to meet new people, make them feel welcome, and network so we can refer business to one another. It takes a community to grow, you can’t do it all alone. So by networking and meeting awesome new business friends and supporting them as I can is a huge priority for me! I love having friends across the globe, it’s super cool!
I’m an avid dog lover.
I raced cars for 12 years, shocking I know! I actually became interested in graphic design because of racing. I wanted to learn how to design the graphics on a race car and make racing t-shirts when I FIRST started studying graphic communications.
I’m originally from northern Wisconsin but now live in Northeast Iowa, also known as the Driftless region. Beautiful area to visit if you haven’t yet!
I love to be outside! Whether it’s kayaking, walking my dog, gardening, or fishing. When I’m not designing up a storm you’ll find me outside with a coffee (depending on the time of day) and researching holistic medicine.
Before I chose to study graphic communications I was actually in school to be a dietitian and pre-med. I have chronic pain with my scoliosis so holistic medicine, healing your body, and how to maintain a balanced life that works for you has always been a top priority of mine along with healing my gut health.
